Using WinZip® to Unzip Files

Zip files are files that contain other files. Typically, the files in a zip file are compressed and usually have file names ending with .ZIP (depending on how they were created). In order for you to extract a zipped file, you need to have WinZip installed on your computer. If you use Windows XP, you can follow the directions found here to extract the zipped files.

When you extract a file, WinZip decompresses it and places it in the folder of your choice. To download and extract zipped files, follow these steps:

1) Right click on the zip icon .
2) In the context menu that appears, left click on the option for "Save Target As…" or "Save Link As…".
3) In the Save As dialog box that opens choose a location where you would like to save the zip file and click the Save button.
4) Minimize the browser window and locate the zip file saved in the previous step.
5) Right click the saved zip file.
6) In the context menu that appears, left click on the option for WinZip, and then choose Extract to Here (see the image below).

7) A new folder will appear in the same location as the zip file. Double click the new folder to view the contents of the downloaded file.
