2. I am trying to play a video/audio clip on the computer and do not hear any sound. How do I fix this?

Here are the general troubleshooting steps to follow if you do not hear sound from the computer:

  1. Make sure the receiver is on (power button is on the front left side of the large black JVC unit)
  2. Make sure the volume is turned up using the large black knob on the front right side of the receiver.
  3. Make sure the front of the receiver displays "CD" on the screen. If not, press the CD button (indicated by a yellow dot).
  4. Make sure the front of the receiver displays "input analog" on the screen. If it reads anything else, press the Input Analog button on the front of the receiver.
  5. Make sure the speakers are on. Press the Speakers On/Off button on the front of the receiver. Read the front of the receiver when you press the button. It will indicate if the speakers were on.
  6. Check for a loose wire at the wall jack. Please report any loose wires to the TIS Help Desk. A technician will be dispatched to the room.

3. I am trying to play a DVD (or VHS tape) and do not hear any sound. How do I fix this?

Here are the general troubleshooting steps to follow if you do not hear sound from a DVD or VHS tape:

  1. Make sure the receiver is on (power button is on the front left side of the large black JVC unit)
  2. Make sure the volume is turned up using the large black knob on the front right side of the receiver.
  3. Make sure the front of the receiver displays "DVD" on the screen. If not, press the DVD button (indicated by a red dot).
  4. Make sure the front of the receiver displays "input analog" on the screen. If it reads anything else, press the Input Analog button on the front of the receiver.

  6. Check for a loose wire at the wall jack. Please report any loose wires to the TIS Help Desk. A technician will be dispatched to the room.

4. I inserted a disc into the DVD player and the display on the front reads "Disc err" or "Err". What does that mean?

This error usually indicates that the DVD player is unable to recognize the format of the disc. This could be a result of: a damaged disc, a non-standard disc format, incorrect "burning" of a disc, or other possible causes. Please contact the TIS Help Desk for further assistance.

5. I need to navigate through a menu on the DVD. How can I do this?

To move through a menu on a DVD, use the navigation buttons on the DVD remote. First, press the DVD button on the top of the DVD remote. Then, point the remote at the front of the DVD player (silver unit) and press the arrow buttons to move around the menu. Press the Enter button to select an item. (Click here to view these buttons)

6. I have a music CD. Which device(s) do I use to play it?

To play a music CD, use the computer and receiver. Power on the computer and log in when prompted using the correct username and password. After the computer boots up, insert the music CD into the tray on the front of the computer. Wait for the media player to launch. Press the CD button on the front of the receiver (indicated by a yellow dot). Use the large black knob on the right side of the receiver to control the volume.
Note: There is no need to turn on the projector if the class is only listening to the audio from a music CD.

7. Where do I plug in my USB flash drive?

After the computer boots up, insert your USB flash drive (see sample image here) into one of the USB ports on the front of the computer (see sample image here). Additionally, you can check for a USB port on the side of the monitor in the room (not all room monitors have these ports). Do not force the device in; it will only fit in one way. If the device does not seem to fit, flip it around and try the other way.

8. I cannot shut off the projector. What could be wrong?

To correctly power off the projector, aim the NEC projector remote at the front of the projector. Hold down the OFF button for a few seconds until the "power off" message appears on the wall (click here to view this button). If you still cannot power off the projector, please contact the TIS Help Desk.

9. Do I need to have the computer on if I am using just a DVD or VHS tape?

No, you do not. If you want to show the class a video from a DVD or VHS tape you need to turn on the projector, receiver and DVD/VCR player. Press the Video button on the NEC projector remote to display the image on the wall and press the DVD button on the front of the receiver (indicated by a red dot) to activate sound.
10. I need to have software installed on a smart classroom computer. What do I do?
Please contact the TIS Help Desk and request that a technician install the software. The request should be put into the Help Desk 2 weeks before needed.

11. Whom do we contact for assistance or to report a problem?

If you need assistance, please contact the TIS Help Desk via phone (Brooklyn x263 - Long Island x1263) or send an e-mail to techhelp@sjcny.edu
