Blackboard Getting Started FAQs - Faculty
The Blackboard Learning System is a course management system that makes the creation and organization of course content on the web relatively simple. Blackboard can be accessed through a web browser from any computer with Internet access. Blackboard @ St. Joseph's College can be used for supplemental use in supporting on-campus, face-to-face classes or to deliver a full online course. The principle features of Blackboard include tools for obtaining course content, course discussion boards (threaded discussions), collaboration tools (chat rooms), e-mail, file sharing, gradebook, test and surveys, and class rosters. |
| 2. Can I use Blackboard for my face-to-face course or is it just for full online courses? | |
| Yes, Blackboard can be used to supplement an on-campus, face-to-face class. You can use Blackboard to provide course materials to students; to communcate with those students; to hold asynchronous (threaded bulletin-board-like) discussions; to assess student learning via quizzes, exams, graded assignments, etc.; to post student grades during and at the end of the course, and so on. | |
| 3. I have never used Blackboard. How do I get started? | |
| There
are two steps to getting started with Blackboard. b) Complete the New Course Request form and return it to Maureen Williams. Once the form is received, an account and course shell is created. The faculty member will be contacted with their account and course information. Note: If you are planning to teach or develop a full online course, please be sure to have your department chairperson sign the request form. |

| 7. I have my own e-mail account. Why do I need a SJC e-mail account for use with Blackboard? |
All St. Joseph's College faculty, staff, and students are given St. Joseph's College e-mail accounts. Very often the personal e-mail addresses chosen by both instructors and students do not reflect the individual's real name. In this age of computer and e-mail viruses many students will not read a message from an e-mail account the student does not recognize - especially if that message has an attachment. When you use your SJC e-mail account the "from" name on the message will match your name on the class roster. Also, using a SJC e-mail account insures that your e-mail messages are virus scanned - both the messages you send and the messages you receive. Other problems which might occur when using a personal e-mail account are the personal e-mail account not being completely compatible with SJC's e-mail or SJC's security software thinking that an attached file is "suspicious". Occasionally file attachments sent to SJC e-mail accounts from personal accounts are deleted as possible viruses. When an e-mail is sent from one St. Joseph's College e-mail address to another most problems with attachments are prevented. The faculty and staff e-mail server is located at http://webmail.sjcny.edu/ Your e-mail address is your Blackboard username plus @sjcny.edu. It is very important that you change your e-mail account password after logging in for the first time. For faculty Webmail assistance, please call the TIS Help Desk at x263 (Brooklyn) or x1263 (LI). The student e-mail server is located at http://student.sjcny.edu/ Their e-mail address is their Blackboard username plus @student.sjcny.edu For student Webmail information, please visit this link. |

| 8. Will the students be automatically enrolled into the course site or do we have to manually enroll each one? |
Students are enrolled into your course site automatically. Enrollment into courses runs on a nightly basis. Students will not have access to the course until the course start date. You must also make the course available. |
| 9. How do I get help with Blackboard? | |
| If you need additional support using Blackboard or developing your course, you can contact one of the TIS trainers here. | |
